On December 5th, a Jersey Mike’s Sub Shop opened in Orlando, Winter Park, Florida, Chicago and Lincoln, Nebraska. Soon, it will be opening its 751st location across 32 states.

Jersey Mike’s opened their first store in Point Pleasant, N.J., in 1956. Last year, the company saw record unit growth of 15% and planned to add 100 additional units on top of their 750 locations already open or in development in 30 states and the District of Columbia.

Hoyt Jones, President of Jersey Mike’s Subs

Hoyt Jones, restaurant President, states “We’ve been fortunate in difficult times to penetrate highly competitive markets like Chicago, DC, and San Diego.”

A food and beverage online magazine asked him this week about his greatest challenge in expanding and how he overcame it. Hoyt’s response was enlightening.

“Overall, 2012 was a good year for restaurateurs with welcome stabilization in financing and commodity pricing. But, how do you create customer loyalty with all the opportunities out there? How do you cut through the clutter with so much messaging through social media and other technologies?”

He overcame the clutter by sticking to the basics, “At Jersey Mike’s, we continued to stick with the fundamentals — authentic brand, quality product, strong customer and team member relationships. And we saw positive growth both in terms of sales as well as a pipeline of new locations.”

His Dream: A sandwich on every corner.

He told recently, “Now, we’re making a push into the Northeast. A few weeks ago, we opened in Downtown Philly’s 30th Street Amtrak Station and will be soon following with a location at New Jersey’s Newark International Airport.

Would you like to help Hoyt reach his dream?  You can, if you can catch him.

Jersey Mike’s only opens new stores on Wednesdays and gives away thousands of sub sandwiches in exchange for a $1 donation to a selected local charity.
